We all enjoy our gardens, but when it comes to garden lawns, it could be a very arduous task. I do like to implement things that will save my time and do excellent work for me. Fortunately, modern technology companies came up with a great solution in the form of Robotic Lawn Mowers to make our lives easier.

Robotic lawnmower could be an excellent addition to your garden and a great investment. It can save a tremendous amount of time for you by mowing your lawn nitly. Especially with small gardens, it can take longer to get the usual mower out, than actually to cut the grass. But with Robotic lawnmowers, you don’t have this problem, as they will save you a lot of time and effort, leaving a great result behind.

The robotic lawnmowers have an efficient and energy-saving system. Unlike many standard lawnmowers, the robotic lawnmower cuts the grass instead of knocking it off. This frequent cutting technique improves the grass quality. When they are done with their job or need to recharge, they are self-sufficient and will return themselves to the docking station. It is like having a pet. Many people are saying that they love these machines and the quality of life they created for them.

Be aware that any of the robotic movers require some installation at the beginning, especially setting up the wire, which might take several hours. However, this needs doing only once. Below I highlighted top Robotic Lawn Machines in 2019 from my point of view, specially designed for small gardens under 600m².

Product Review – WORX WR130E S300 Landroid Robotic Mower

WORX WR130E Landroid Robotic Mower is suitable for small gardens up to 300m². The mower chooses its direction at random and will make sure your entire lawn has evenly mowed without leaving unattractive mowing areas. The mower will also know when it needs recharging and will return to its base station. It can stop itself if it senses a problem or obstacle. It will also automatically stop its blade turning disc from rotating, when somebody lifts it off the ground, preventing an accident.

This robotic mower has a rain sensor, which will detect the rain. As a result, it will stop mowing and will follow the boundary wire back to its charging base. Due to its design, this robotic mower can cut the grass with much better precision and in the long run to create an elegant appearance of your lawn.

With Smart Auto scheduling and intelligent navigation, it is faster and more agile than other robot mowers. The WR130E is safe, quiet, and comes with a battery that fits any Worx 20V cordless tool. It is one of the first fully customizable robotic mower on the market.

One of the many advantages of this robotic mover is AIA Technology. Due to this technology, the mower can skillfully navigate your garden and will adapt quickly to narrow passages. For most of the robotic mowers, this could be challenging, but the WORX can handle this challenge easily. Over time this robotic mower will only become better, as by navigating through different areas of your garden, it is continually learning.

AIA technology also helps to be more precise in mowing over different areas of the lawn. As many gardens have more than one lawn area, the Worx S300 can easily cope with different areas, as long as they are connected. It also can climb up to 35% in a bumpy garden area. However, if the mowing areas are entirely separate from each other, you will need to cut grass manually in those places or carry the mower over.

Downsides

Many users have found the start guide to be challenging to follow and inadequate. Worx does not include a printed manual in the package. This problem could be easily solved, as you can find great videos or guides as well as manual available online.

Initial set up might become a bit challenging and take some time, as you learn to navigate and getting used to this machine. But with a small garden, it actually should not make too much effort, especially as you need to do it only once at the beginning.

Edges are not always perfectly cut, as this machine does not have the Cut to Edge feature. However, this problem you will find with almost all of the robotic lawnmowers. And if you get your initial set up right at the beginning, you can overcome this problem and the rest of the edges you will still need to cut manually.

Conclusion

WORX WR130E S300 Landroid Robotic Mower is an excellent product on the market and is an excellent option for small gardens with up to 300m². If you can plan at least a few days for the initial set up of this robotic mower (over a long weekend), you can avoid issues mentioned above. You will also be able to find all of the problems at the very beginning and correct them as you go along. It might be not a one-day project, especially with a guide being not that straight forward.

Overall, it is reliable, effective, and easy to use. It has great standard features as well as even more functionality should you wish to purchase additional accessories. It will keep your grass neat and healthy with minimal effort on your side in the long run. If you set it up correctly at the beginning, it will save you money and once set up, it will immediately save you time and effort.

Product Review – Husqvarna 105 Automower

Husqvarna 150 Automower is best suited for Small Gardens. Due to the free movement pattern of this machine, the lawn is perfectly cut, achieving a beautiful look. The sharp blades cut the grass from all directions, helping it to grow strong. If the lawnmower meets an obstacle, it will stop and redirect itself. You can schedule the time of mowing if you want to mow the lawn around the clock. This lawnmower is waterproof. When it runs out of power, it will return to its charging station and find its way back even in comples gardens. Overall it is reliable, easy to use and with a clean & tight finish.

This robotic lawnmower moves randomly through your lawn, making sure that a movement pattern is not the same. As a result, the grass is mown evenly without any mowing lines from the robotic lawnmower.

By gardens which have different working areas and are divided by a paving stone path, the robotic lawnmower can manage it. It can run over the paving stones as long as the level of them is the same as the lawn. You can lay the boundary wire under the paving stones. You can also put the boundary wire between the paving stones. Ensure that the tiles are in level with the lawn to avoid excessive wear on the robotic lawnmower.

If the working area consists of two areas which the robotic lawnmower has difficulty traveling between, it is recommended to set up a secondary area. Instances of this are 25% slopes or a passage that is narrower than 60 cm. You will need to lay the boundary wire around the secondary area so that it forms an island outside of the main area. The robotic lawnmower must be moved manually between the primary and secondary area when the lawn in the secondary area needs mowing.

Downsides

As with all robot mowers, Husqvarna 150 Automower might have a difficulty to mow near the fences, bushes, or the side of your house. Once in a while, you might need to trim your glass in such areas yourself. Even though this is still a flaw, it should not take too much effort to fix it.

This model cannot handle separate lawns independently. For example, if you have a front and back garden that is under 600m² in size that is not connected, then you will need to carry the mower from one to the other.

Conclusion

Husqvarna 105 Automower is one of the best models you can get for the Smaller Garden. Its technology is very efficient in comparison to other products in a similar range on the market. It also has fewer flaws with it than comparable models and is one of the most reliable mowers.

Overall, it is a great lawnmower proving a reliable and consistent mow of your lawn. As a result, you will get more time to yourself and cheaper mower maintenance as you don’t need to pay anyone else to do it for you.

Product Review – Robomow RX20u

The RX20u is the smallest and most affordable model Robomow has ever built. It is best suited to those with Small Gardens (between 200 –300m²) that are a little more complex than most. Because of its smart navigation and mobility, the RX20u can handle these gardens much more effectively than others. It has excellent features such as the floating deck, mobile/tablet connection/smart app, remote diagnostics & effective navigation, to name a few. It is easy-to-use, less than a few hours to install.

This robotic mower has a build-in Lift sensor. If somebody lifts it from the ground during the blade’s operation, the blade will stop rotating immediately. The mower also has a Tilt sensor, and therefore if the mower is tilted up towards a vertical position, the blade will also instantly stop, preventing any injuries.

The build-in sensor also detects interfering obstacles in its way during operation. When the mower collides with an obstacle, it will stop the rotation of the blade immediately, will stop movement in that direction and reverse itself away.

Downsides

Bluetooth connection: the connection may not work if you are standing too far from the mower. As a result, you might not be able to navigate and control it from far away.

Shape and size of blade: the mower can’t reach grass properly beside a wall or fence. You will have to get the trimmers out once in a while as a result. The RX range of robotic mowers do NOT come with a rain sensor.

Charging time of 16 – 20 hours: it is a very long time to wait before the RX20u can be charged compared to other mowers. But since this machine has been build for small gardens up to 300m², it should finish its work in one go.

Conclusion

Robomow RX20u has excellent features and many good qualities, easy to use, effective, and having a couple of small flaws is not a big problem.

3. Bosch Indego 400 Connect

Bosch Indego 400 Connect
Bosch Indego 400 Connect
Product: Bosch Indego 400 Connect
Cheapest Place to buy: Amazon.com
My Rating: 8 out of 10

Key Product Features

Working Area (+/- 20%): up to 400m²

Charging Time: 45 minutes
Mow Time On One Charge: 35 minutes
Charging System: Automatic
Cutting Width: 19cm
Cutting Height (min-max): 30 - 50 mm
Noise Level: 63 dB (about as loud as a normal conversation)
Dimensions L x W x H: 44,5 x 36,4 x 20,2 cm
Weight: 7.5kg
Anti-theft protection
AUTO Calendar Function

Product Review – Bosch Indego 400 Connect

Bosch Indego 400 Connect designed for maintaining small to medium lawns. It mows the lawn cleanly and quietly, without the need to manually program the calendar. This lawnmower will remember where it has already cut thanks to Logicut, the efficient navigation system. It goes up, and down the lawn in parallel lanes; this makes it up to twice as fast as a random navigation system, and no area is left unmowed. And because it knows where it has already been, you can use the lawn already mowed while it will finish cutting the rest.

You can connect your mobile phone or tablet to this mower via Mobile App and make alterations to its mowing schedule. This function is excellent for someone who is always on the move.

It makes use of Bump Sensors to ensure it doesn’t continually drive into any significant obstacles. When it identifies obstacles, it will stop in place, recalculate its route and continue in a different direction. This robotic lawnmower will save this information in its memory fo the future mows so that the same thing doesn’t happen again.

The lawnmower has build-in Lift and Tilt Sensors. If someone lifts or tilts the machine, the blade will stop immediately, preventing any injury.

Downsides

This model does not have an embedded Cut to Edge function. Therefore, as with similar products on the market, you will need to trim your grass around the edges of your house, fences, or trees manually.

Separate lawns area: If you have a front and back garden, then you’ll have to carry the mower between the two.

Docking station requirements: It has some annoying docking station requirements which could be difficult for small lawns to cope. It needs a 2m runaway in front of the dock and at 1m of clearance behind.

Conclusion

Overall, Bosch Indego 400 Connect appears to be a good model. It has the most efficient navigation system in the market (supposedly), a very effective cutting system, and it is in your complete control on the go. Apart from a few flaws, you could consider this mower to be the perfect model.

5. Flymo 1200R

Product: Flymo 1200R
Cheapest Place to buy: Amazon.com
My Rating: 8 out of 10

Key Product Features

Working Area (+/- 20%): up to 400m²
Maximum Incline: 25%
Charging Time: 50-100 minutes
Mow Time On One Charge: 60-80 minutes
Charging System: Automatic
Cutting Width: 17cm
Cutting Height (min-max): 20-50mm
Noise Level: 58 dBA
Dimensions: L x W x H: 59x26x44cm
Weight: 7.4 kg
Anti-theft protection

Product Review – Flymo 1200R

Flymo 1200R is excellent for all garden shapes up to 400m². It mows in a random pattern, whatever the garden shape so that all parts are covered. When it runs out of battery, the mower will return to its charging station. It is practical, reliable and without wheel ruts, resulting in a perfectly cared-for lawn. You can set different mowing times or days. It works very quietly and without emissions.

Lift and tilt sensors are embedded in this machine and guarantee additional safety for everyone. When someone lifts the mower, the blades immediately stop and thereby prevent injuries.

Secondary areas: If you have a garden consisting of two areas, it is recommended to set up a secondary area. The robotic lawnmower has to be moved then manually between the primary and secondary area.

If you have a garden divided by a paving stone path in level with the lawn, the robotic mower might be able to run over the path. In this case, you might be considering laying the boundary wire under the paving stones. You can also arrange the boundary wire in the joint between the paving stones. However, the robotic lawnmower must never run over gravel, mulch, or similar material which can damage the blades.

Boundaries within the working area: Sensitive collision sensors and the boundary wire help the 1200R to avoid obstacles in the garden. However, when you lay the boundary wires very close together, the robotic lawnmower can drive over it.

Downsides

Perimeter wire: some users stated that the mower could sometimes bite through (or even just run over) the perimeter wire and run off course. It could be annoying, as you may need to rescue it once in a while. But if at the very beginning you installed the wire correctly and very close to the ground, this could be avoided.

Obstacles in the grass: if during the mow any objects are left on the lawn, the robotic lawnmower might eat it up instead of just gliding over it. This issue could lead to a broken blade. Make sure you remove all the obstacles when you are setting up the mower. Also assure that wire has been set up correctly around more significant obstacles, such as flower beds, trees, etc.

Signal issues: it could happen that might lose the signal of the wire even when there is nothing wrong with it. You then might see on display a sign ‘no signal loop.’ To solve this, you will need to place your machine back at the charging station and disconnect it from the power source.

Slops and Bumps: this robotic lawnmower does not handle very well a lot of bumps or slops. If your garden is unusually shaped, you might want to consider another model. Also, as with the most robotic mowers, this model does not have a Cut to Edge feature. You will need to get your trimmers out once in a while and do it yourself. It is not possible to navigate this machine through the Smart App as with other similar products, as No Smart App built-in.

Conclusion

Despite a few flaws, all in all, Flymo 1200R is an excellent robotic mower on the market for Small Gardens. Usually, you can get a good value of money for this product on the market in comparison to other products. The power and cutting system of this robotic mower are very effective and efficient, and at the end of the day, you will save a lot of time by not mowing the lawn yourself.

Critical recommendations for all Robotic Movers

Before starting your robotic mower for the first time, you should cut the grass to the height of no more than 9 cm with your manual lawnmower. Then, set the cutting height of your mower to its maximum setting for its first time mowing.

The best results of any robotic mower you will have in dry weather. Wet grass can build up on the blade turning disc and within the motor, and can also cause loose traction and slippage while working. Any mower is also afraid of lightning storms. In case of a lightning storm, protect it by unplugging the charging base, disconnecting the boundary wire, and making sure it is not allowed to charge.

Never let it travel over gravel. Remove or prevent access to obstacles that robotic lawnmower could climb on and be damaged. Remove all debris and foreign objects from your law

Keep it clean and brush from time to time. If the blades are always in good condition, you will obtain the best mowing results. If you want to ensure that the blades are sharp for as long as possible, you will need to keep the lawn free from branches, small stones, and other objects. Store your mower in your shed or garage during the winter.

Have fun and happy mowing with this amazing robotic technology!

I love the idea of a robotic lawnmower. I didn’t even know that existed …! Wow, I want one! I usually don’t have grass, I live in the semi-desert, but after hurricane season when the garden is overgrown and it looks like a jungle, I could use a lawn moyer, at least for the tall grass stalks. These robotic lawn mowers are so small and they look as if they just stepped out of a sci-fi movie, lol.

Does any of them cut tall grass or is it always recommended to first cut the grass and then set the robot loose? I really liked the Flymo, but that one doesn’t cut tall grass – even if it would be once or twice a year?

    Christine,

Many thanks for your comments and questions. Generally speaking, before starting any of the robotic mower, including Flymo, for the first time, you should cut the grass to the minimum height and no more than 9 cm with your manual lawnmower. Then, set the cutting height of your mover to its maximum setting for its first time mowing. After that you can adjust to a minimum hight if you’d like.

    Hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Olga

My first passion has always been gardening and landscaping. I am one person that can do gardening all day, every day as I enjoy the outcome after a work done. Robotic lawn mowers is a very great concept. I have not come across one before and I would be interested in finding one. The WORX WR130E Landroid lawn Mower looks great and I can see it does the job. I love that it is only 8 kg, and can fit a small space during storage. It is also great that it has the anti-theft feature. I think 60 minutes is actually enough to get through one small garden.

Thank you for these reviews. These are great suggestions for gardening enthusiasts.

    Carol,

Many thanks for reading and your comments. I am glad that you found it useful. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for this review. I am very interested in at least one of this mower. But what has being holding back is that my lawn is about 150 – 175 square meters but it’s kinda irregular in shape. It is divided in 2 parts by a row of stepping stones. each about 500 mm x 400 mm. about 220 mm to 300 mm apart. when put in they were flush with the lawn level, but are now about 25 mm to 50 mm below the lawn surface. Would this be a problem for any of this mower? I’m longing for your answer.

Regards!

    ·

    Jordan,

Many thanks for your comments and questions. In your case, since your lawn is divided by paving stones, you can try the following:

Divided area: When the working area is divided by a paving stone path that is level with the lawn, it is possible to allow the robotic lawnmower to run over the path. It can be an advantage to lay the boundary wire under the paving stones. The boundary wire can also be laid in the joint between the paving stones. Ensure that the tiles are in level with the lawn to avoid excessive wear on the robotic lawnmower.

Secondary areas: If the working area consists of two areas which the robotic lawnmower has difficulty travelling between, it is recommended to set up a secondary area. Instances of this are 25% slopes or a passage that is narrower than 60 cm. Lay the boundary wire then around the secondary area so that it forms an island outside of the main area. The robotic lawnmower must be moved manually between the main and secondary area when the lawn in the secondary area has to be cut.

Above would be applicable for e.g. Husqvarna 105, but also for Worx, if you manage to set up your wires correctly. It is not ideal if your pavement stones are e.g. 50 mm below the lawn and you may need then to carry it over manually, but with a small incline it might still climb it over. But before buying any of this products, please check manual online, so you are aware of all the setting requirements for the irregular gardens like yours and how to lay the wire correctly in such instances.

    Hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Olga

Some interesting choices here.  Your third choice seems to have an awfully long charge time but I like that it’s run time is quite long

The Flymo, on the other hand, would be my last choice. There seems to be a lot of downsides to this one.

I like that they all have Anti-theft protection or an alarm and that some are programmable. Those are the two things that I would like to have if I was to purchase one of these. Unfortunately, I live in a co-op and we have our landscaping done by a business.

If I still had to cut grass? I would choose the WORX WR130E S300 Landroid Robotic Mower. It has a reasonable charge time and good run time as well as the other things I mentioned that I would like.

Thanks for your review, you highlighted here some great choices of the robotic mowers for small gardens. I didn’t know that something like that actually is available on the market. These robotic lawn mowers have great functionality and can indeed save a lot of time.

·

I like the idea of having more time for myself and my family while this little robot is doing this work for me in the garden. I live in an apartment, but I will recommend to my parents one of these lawnmowers. Thank you very much for putting such an extensive review.
